Dr. Derek Nolan specializes in improving dairy production systems through education, outreach, and applied research. With a background in milk quality and decision economics, he supports dairy producers in making informed management decisions that enhance both milk quality and farm sustainability. Raised on a dairy farm in northeast Iowa, Dr. Nolan brings firsthand experience and deep industry insight to his work. He earned his B.S. in Dairy Science from Iowa State University and completed both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Animal Sciences at the University of Kentucky. His extension efforts include coordinating the Illinois 4-H Dairy Program and serving as the Illinois Dairy Ambassador Coach through the Midwest Dairy Association. Dr. Nolan is committed to hands-on learning and regularly engages youth and students in experiential education that deepens their understanding of dairy cows and production systems. His current research projects focus on the economic impact of dairy management practices, optimal treatment decisions for mastitis, and farm energy costs. Dr. Nolan has also contributed to initiatives like the Southeast Quality Milk Initiative, helping producers troubleshoot milk quality and mammary gland health issues
